Union Kitchen

Washington, D.C.

Client Profile

Union Kitchen is D.C.’s first small business food incubator, striving to build a food system that is profitable and sustainable. By providing space to small business owners for food production and opportunities for sales, Union Kitchen catalyzes the growth of business, jobs, and culture.

Union Kitchen’s newest space is a 15,000 square-foot warehouse located in D.C.’s Ivy City neighborhood. The new property houses independent spaces for Union Kitchen’s largest members, as well as extra storage space and a grocery/café area.

Project Scope

Streetsense was tasked with providing interior design and architectural services for Union Kitchen’s new Ivy City location. The Streetsense team did an immersive study of the existing NoMa location with the owner and developed a new design based on the lessons learned and operational inefficiencies within the existing location.

Based on the research collected during the study, the Streetsense team developed an improved design for the new space to create an efficient layout, increase potential rentable space(s) for the owner, and provide an overall better customer experience.

The new design can become a prototype for future Union Kitchen locations and a viable business model to be replicated nationally.
